Hand Painted furniture was a unique design element at this week's High Point Furniture Market.  Not only was it hand painted, the furniture was covered in artist canvas for texture. This makes it a truly unique work of art.  And, what a great way to update old furniture!

Cenotes are natural "sinkholes" located in Mexico and Central America.   They are formed when the limestone bedrock collapses and exposes groundwater underneath.  Secret underworld taverns are created that are truly breathtaking. It is no wonder why the Mayans of the Yucatan Peninsula used the cenotes for sacrificial offerings to the gods.

Lucky for us, modern day cenotes are used for a refreshing  dip or swim.  In some cases, cenotes are large enough to kayak on and connect to the ocean.  Our visit to Stotuta de Peon provided us with a cenote to dip our toes and enjoy local margaritas.

The water inside the cenote was crystal clear.  The clearest water you will ever see.

Our short climb underground into the cenote.

Underground world with sun shining through from civilization above.

Refreshing ripples of the cenote.

Can you believe this is how clear the water is?  That bluish/green color in the photo is the water where you can see every detail "clear" to the bottom.

If you have a chance to visit a cenote, I would highly recommend it.  They are beautiful!

Today I strolled through the many fabric (tela) stores of Merida, MX.  Many of their fabric stores like Modatelas consisted of several floors packed with fabrics, trims and accessories.  Here is a pictorial of my visit.

This is my favorite pattern I have found so far in Merida.  Love the design and color of these poppies!

There were a ton of laminate and cotton fabrics for the table.  I think the ones above would make great tote bags!

All colors of the rainbow were represented.

I could have a lot of fun with this twine!

These would make colorful costumes for Carnival!

I am so enamored with the abundant color in Mexico.  Today, my walk took me through the center of Tulum where I came across some great finds through "color shopping".  If you have never shopped by color, I highly recommend it!  You will lose yourself in the colors that inspire you and discover your personal design palette along the way.

After reviewing my snapshots today, it is evident that I am drawn to a very bold, bright color palette of red, blue, and green hues.

This retro Corona tray would make a great kitchen accessory.  The combination of red and aqua are one of my favorites in any design.

Handmade sketch books of all colors lined the shelves of this tienda.  What a beautiful way to doodle!

These pendant light fixtures looked like elongated bottles.  But, what really attracted me to them was the brilliant use of color in this exterior setting.

The Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) sculptures have always fascinated me.  They have become a very popular kitschy design element.

I collect tea towels and love the different ways they can be sewn, screen printed, and embellished.  These tea towels are hand embroidered and absolutely stunning!

These festive rattles for children are hand painted and made out of paper mache.  So much
fun!

The hand crafted detail in these shadow boxes are exceptional.  Each one is a three-dimensional miniature scene.  The amount of time and thought that went into these small pieces of art is very impressive.

Shopping by color today was so much fun!  New design elements abound!

Do you shop by color?  What colors inspire you?

I love architecture!  Every detail, carving, curve, color and texture tells a story from one time to another through to the portals of today.  The layers of paint can be peeled away to discover rich tradition, trend and progression from one generation to the next.

One of my favorite architectural elements are entrances.  They are the eyes to the soul of any structure.  Inspiration abounds from my walk today in the colonial city of Merida, Mexico.  How do these portals speak to you?
